8 FACTORS FAVORING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FISHING INDUSTRY IN EAST AFRICA

Factors favoring the development of the fishing industry in East Africa Availability of enough fishing grounds such as Lake Victoria, Kyoga, Tanganyika, and the Indian Ocean.  Availability of high-value fish species such as Tilapia and Nile perch with high market demand. Introduction of better and effective fishing methods such as the use of gill nets. Introduction of better fishing vessels such motorboats fitted with engines which are used for fishing. Presence of abundant plankton (food for fish) has led to fish multiplication in large numbers. Improved transport network linking fishing grounds to market centers. Availability of ready market for fish which is both local and international e.g. fish processing industries, local people, and neighbouring D.R.C. Indented nature of fishing grounds which are favourable for the development of fish landing sites e.g. Kasenyi and Majanji on Lake Victoria. Introduction of fish corporations which teach better the fishermen ne...

Reasons why marine fishing is not yet developed in Tanzania

The continental shelf is narrow with little fish. The warm current in Mozambique has made the coastal waters warmer which discourages fish breeding. Competition from developed countries such as Japan and Korea that have advanced facilities. Inadequate capital to purchase modern vessels and sophisticated equipment. The lack of a well-developed transport network discourages the trade of fish in the interior.   The influence of current The convergence of cold and ocean currents improves the circulation of oxygen and the dispersal of nutrients for fish. Currents regulate the temperature of water favouring the growth of plankton. Warm currents moderate water temperatures enabling fishing to be carried out throughout the year. Indented coastline Indented coastlines provide ideal breeding grounds for fish and the development of ports. Climate The cool climate allows the growth of plankton. The cool climate has made fishing conditions for preservation favourable. Technology The advanced technology of the area has led to the rapid growth of the fishing industry e.g use of riders in fishing and presentation.
