Problems facing Fishing in Kenya and their possible solutions

The following are Problems facing Fishing in Kenya and their possible solutions 1. Environmental limitations tropical location hence warm waters which limit the number and variety of fish in marine fisheries. Solution: - increasing research to get varieties of fish species that can survive under these tropical conditions and introduce them in our fishing grounds. These research centers include Fresh Water Research Station – Nairobi, Sagana Fish Farming Centre – Kirinyaga and Marine Fisheries Research Station - Mombasa 2. Over fishing/overexploitation of fish resource this is caused by overharvesting of fisheries, use of small meshed nets, seining and trawling. It endangers the natural replacement of certain species since with time the fish species reduce because young fish are not allowed time to mature. Solution: - More vigilant surveillance of the fisheries, licensing of fishermen to control their numbers and activities, restocking overfished areas, prohibiting small meshed gi...

Factors Which Have Favoured Fishing in Lake Victoria

Shallow waters which allow plankton to thrive in abundance. Several beaches and highlands within the lake which provide good landing sites for fish boats e.g. Asembo and Mbita. Large and ready market within major towns because of dense population e.g. Kampala, Kisumu and Mwanza. Presence of a variety of species which are of economic value. Presence of fish eating culture as it is a traditional diet of the people around. Fishermen have formed co-operatives which help them in marketing of fis RELATED POSTS 9 CONDITIONS FAVOURING IRRIGATION FARMING IN EGYPT 5 CAUSES OF RURAL-RURAL MIGRATION IN KENYA 10 AIMS OF KILOMBERO VALLEY IRRIGATION SCHEME 4 FEATURES OF MAP STATEMENT SCALE 10 ADVANTAGES OF OIL PRODUCTION IN THE MIDDLE EAST 7 DISADVANTAGES OF AIR TRANSPORT 10 PROBLEMS FACING COFFEE FARMING IN KENYA IMPACTS OF POVERTY ON ENVIRONMENT 10 PROBLEMS FACING COTTON FARMING IN UGANDA COMPARISON BETWEEN FISHING IN KENYA AND JAPAN

8 FACTORS FAVORING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FISHING INDUSTRY IN EAST AFRICA

Factors favoring the development of the fishing industry in East Africa Availability of enough fishing grounds such as Lake Victoria, Kyoga, Tanganyika, and the Indian Ocean.  Availability of high-value fish species such as Tilapia and Nile perch with high market demand. Introduction of better and effective fishing methods such as the use of gill nets. Introduction of better fishing vessels such motorboats fitted with engines which are used for fishing. Presence of abundant plankton (food for fish) has led to fish multiplication in large numbers. Improved transport network linking fishing grounds to market centers. Availability of ready market for fish which is both local and international e.g. fish processing industries, local people, and neighbouring D.R.C. Indented nature of fishing grounds which are favourable for the development of fish landing sites e.g. Kasenyi and Majanji on Lake Victoria. Introduction of fish corporations which teach better the fishermen ne...

7 WAYS OF CONSERVING THE FISHERIES

The following are ways in which the Kenyan government should conserve fisheries: Licensing fishermen to control their number thus preventing overfishing Restricting fishing to specific seasons to allow breeding and maturing of fish Enforcing international conventions to protect endangered fish species Restocking of overfished waters by breeding fingerlings in the fish farms and releasing them to fisheries Use of standard-sized nets to ensure that only mature fish are caught Restricting the disposal of untreated wastes into fisheries to avoid pollution Monitoring or discouraging the entry of foreign fishermen off the Indian Ocean water RELATED POSTS 9 CONDITIONS FAVOURING IRRIGATION FARMING IN EGYPT 5 CAUSES OF RURAL-RURAL MIGRATION IN KENYA 10 AIMS OF KILOMBERO VALLEY IRRIGATION SCHEME 4 FEATURES OF MAP STATEMENT SCALE 10 ADVANTAGES OF OIL PRODUCTION IN THE MIDDLE EAST 7 DISADVANTAGES OF AIR TRANSPORT 10 PROBLEMS FACING COFFEE FARMING IN KENYA IMPACTS OF POVERTY ON ENVIRONMENT 1...

SOLUTION TO PROBLEMS FACING FISHING INDUSTRY IN EAST AFRICA

Formation of Ministry of fisheries to control fishing activities in the country. Formation of fishing cooperatives for advice, loans, and easy marketing. Educating the public about the value of the fish as a source of proteins and vitamins to increase its market. Removal of the water hyacinth by using chemicals to provide enough oxygen for the fish. There is construction and rehabilitation of road networks linking to fish grounds to improve fish deliveries. Treatment of sewage and industrial wastes to reduce water pollution. Setting strict laws prohibiting illegal fishing methods like poisoning and indiscriminate nets to protect the young fish. Introduction of modern fish preservation methods like freezing and canning by extending power to rural areas. Regular police patrols to reduce theft on water bodies. Introduction of commercial and high-value fish species e.g. Nile Perch which have a large market. Increased importation of fishing facilities such as motorboats and motor eng...

Significance of the fishing industry in Kenya

Source of food rich in protein. Fish provides animal protein and food for fishermen and consumers in the lake Victoria region, in fish farming areas and along the coastal strip Source of revenue for government through taxation. The revenue collected through taxing fishing activities is used to develop infrastructure in the areas. Export of fish earns Kenya foreign exchange. Creation of employment opportunities. The industry creates numerous job opportunities for the people living near the fishing areas either self-employed or employed by the fishermen. This earns them some income. Development of related industries. The manufacture of fish nets at Thika and the making of fish hook. Fish wastes are processed to produce lubricants fertilizers and cosmetics.
