 African Socialism in Tanzania was adopted through the Arusha Declaration of 1967 and implemented through the Ujamaa scheme / policy.

OBJECTIVES OF UJAMAA OR AFRICAN SOCIALISM IN TANZANIA

The Arusha Declaration was a government paper that ushered the Ujamaa policy.

The Ujamaa policy / scheme referred to the spirit of brotherhood, familyhood.

It required the majority Tanzanians to go back to the villages for effective national development.
NB: The policy was adopted by Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere in 1967 and stretched to 1985.

DECLARATION OF 1967

  • It was aimed at creating a classless society in Tanzania (egalitarian).

  • The concept was aimed at cementing national unity in Tanzania.

  • To increase agricultural production through better use of labour.

  • It was aimed at promoting self – reliance and defend the independence of Tanzania.

  • The desire to prevent neo-colonialism or foreign influence and hegemony.

  • To mobilize masses for national defense and development.

  • The need to eradicate poverty from Tanzania.

  • Nyerere also aimed at ensuring industrial development.

  • The need to uplift the standards of living of the people.

  • To ensure food security and eradicate famine through agricultural modernization.

  • To promote equality and reduce income inequality.

  • To fight corruption in government and party officials.

  • To ensure rural development and transformation and curb Rum.

  • To create a national language and ease communication.
