5 TYPES OF HUMAN ACTIVITIES

 Human activities are functions, tasks, or works done by human beings over time for achieving certain purposes.

In total there are five types of human activities namely primary human activities, secondary human activities, tertiary human activities, quaternary human activities, and quinary human activities.

5 TYPES OF HUMAN ACTIVITIES


These types of human activities together with their examples are going to be explained one by one below.

The following are five types of human activities

Primary human activities

are human activities that involve extracting raw materials directly from the earth.

Examples of primary activities are farming, fishing, lumbering, and livestock keeping.

Secondary human activities

these are human activities that involve the processing of raw materials into useful products.

These activities involve converting raw materials into finished products and are mainly performed in urban areas.

they accelerate the development of primary activities because they provide the market for products from primary activities such as agricultural products and mineral ores

Examples of secondary human activities are the processing of steel and iron from iron ores and processing coffee from the coffee pulp.

Tertiary human activities

these are human activities that involve the provision of services that are needed in society.

Examples of tertiary activities include

  • trade

  • tourism,

  • education,

  • transportation.

  • Mass media

  • Social services

  • Public health

  • Financial

  • Pharmacy

  • Waste disposal

  • Retail activities

significance of tertiary activities include

  • provide employment especially in town and cities

  • Stimulates development of other economic activities e.g. manufacturing of goods to be sold

  • education provides skilled labour

  • health and social services contribute to productivity and health of the people

  • Financial institutions, e.g. banks, offer important financial support to businesses like loans

  • Electricity supply provides power for all economic activities/sectors and

  • domestic needs

Quaternary human activities

these are human activities that involve the provision of intellectual services and information.

it involves The generation and sharing of hi-tech knowledge e.g. medical research, Google glasses development, or web page design

Examples of Quaternary activities are consultancy activities, research, and library activities.

Quinary human activities

these are activities that are done by top executives or officials in such a field as government. it is also referred to as gold collar activities

They involve the highest level of decision-making in society or the economy.
