PURPOSE AND ELEMENTS OF LITERATURE REVIEW IN RESEARCH
A literature review is an evaluative report of information found in the literature related to your selected area of study.
The review should describe, summarize, evaluate and clarify this literature. It should give a theoretical base for the research and help you (the author) determine the nature of your research.
In writing the literature review, the purpose is to convey to the reader what knowledge and ideas have been established on a topic, and what their strengths and weaknesses are.
It is not just a descriptive list of the material available or a set of summaries.
While the form of a literature review may vary with different types of studies the basic purpose of literature review remain constant.
in this post, we are going to provide an in-depth explanation on various aspects of literature review in research.
The purpose of conducting literature review in research:
Literature review enable researcher to learn from previous theory on the subject.
It justify the research
It ensure that the research has not been done before
It shows where the study fits into existing body of knowledge
It illustrate how the subject has been studied before
Literature review highlight the flaws in previous research
Literature review show gaps in previous research
Literature help to show how the conducted study is adding to understanding and knowledge of the field.
It help refine, refocus or even change the research topic
literature review identify the relationship of works in the context of its distribution to the topic and to other works
it place your research within the ccontext of the existing literature making the case for why further study is needed
provide the foundation of knowledge on the topic
it identify the areas of prior scholarship to prevent duplications and give credit to other researchers
to identify other researchers in your field
to identify the distinctive contribution your research will make and to produce a rationale and justification for your study
to learn how research findings are discussed and presented in your descipline area
elements in the literature review
locate major formative work in the field
ascertain key researchers working on the topic
find ideas, conclusion and theories and establish similaties and differences
notice main methodologies and research techniques
identify gap in existing research
show relationship between previous studies or theories
provide context for your own research
explore existing information in the field of research
For each resource of literature review ask these questions
has the author clearly defined the problem or issue and has its significance been clearly established?
could he problem or topic have been approachec more effectively from another perspective?
what is the author's research orientation and theoreticla framework?
in research study how sound are the basic components of the study designed? how accurate and valid are the measurement? is the analysis of the data accurate and are the conclusion valid and logical?
who is the intended audience of the material?
is there an objective basis to the reasoning or is the author merely trying to prove their already held beliefs?
hiw does the author structure the argument?
in what ways does the item contribute to your understanding of the problem? what are strength and limitations?
how does the item specifically relate to the research you are about to undertake?
