  • MALAWI has earned foreign exchange in form of invisible export from thousands of tourists who visit the country from Europe, Asia and from other continents due to her tourist potentials. Such income has been used to rehabilitate roads, set up heath units, etc.

  • The industry has provided employment opportunities to many MALAWIANS such as those working in Hotel like Serena, tour and travel agencies, game guides. This has earned income to workers and thus improved standards of living.

  • It has led to conservation of wildlife of flora and fauna through gazetting and restricting of areas. this has helped to modify MALAWI’s climate by forests and protecting her heritage for the future generations.

  • Tourism facilitates the development of important infrastructure such as airfield, health units, lodges for tourist accommodation. These have led to the development of MALAWI.

  • It has promoted and reflected the cultural heritage of MALAWI i.e. historical sites, museums, cultural sites, all protect MALAWI’s image abroad.

  • Tourism has led to development of the craft industry and agricultural sector through providing market to the products of such sectors. This means provision of more jobs and income from craft industry thus improved living standards of MALAWIANS.

  • Tourism has led to diversification of MALAWI’s economy from over dependence on the agricultural sector. This has resulted into increased foreign exchange used to set up schools and health centers thus MALAWI’s development.

  • It has improved on international relationship between Uganda and the countries like Norway, Germany and Britain, where tourists come from. This has helped MALAWI to become politically stable.

  • Training of skilled manpower like hotel attendants, game guides, etc.

  • Government revenue through taxing tourist transport companies, tourist's hotels, etc.

  • Growth of urban centers

  • Promoted environmental conservation through forest reserves, gazzetting of national parks.

  • It has promoted education and research in botany and zoology.

Negative impacts can be viewed as disadvantages or problems.

The following negative impacts of tourism are common to MALAWI and other countries in Africa including South Africa, Kenya, BOTSWANA, Namibia, and Tanzania.

 The following are the negative impacts of tourism in Botswana;

  • The tourism industry is 100% run by the government but there are some private companies such as Safari companies that take a lot of profit from tourism.

  • Tourism is an unreliable industry. The number of tourists can fluctuate from year to year due to different problems such as a shortage of money to tour by tourists.

  • Like other industries, the tourism industry pays MALAWI lower wages since most of the higher posts are in the hands of foreigners.

  • Tourism disturbs wildlife e.g. animals including birds are disturbed by the noise made by motorboats and motor vehicles.

  • Tourism can directly affect wildlife due to the littering of the environment or protected areas. Some of the roads are littered along their sides, even some of the camping sites are sometimes left with a lot of litter.

  • Some of irresponsible tourists and poachers are involved in vandalism, especially inside the parks. Trees are indiscriminately destroyed as well as fences.

  • Tourists are said to be partly involved in the disruptions or changes in the culture of some of the local people.

  • Local cultures could be looked down on as barbaric, outrageous or freak shows.

  • Tourism is also blamed for the increase in prostitution as well as the spread of diseases including HIV-Aids.

  • Tourism is occupying a large land due to the creation of national parks and game reserves.
